Job Title: Operations Specialist for Animal Research Lab Setup
Location: London, UK (remote / home office possible)
Employment Type: 0.5 Part-time (with potential to go full-time), Fixed-term (12-18 months with potential to become permanent)
Start Date: August 1, 2024
Salary: £52,000 per annum for full time (pro-rated for part-time work).
About Us:
We are a new neurotech startup in the London area with a goal of establishing whole-brain-emulation research based on neuroethological research paradigms. We are seeking to establish an animal research lab in the London area to carry out our work in rodents. We are seeking a highly motivated Operations Specialist to join our team. This role is critical in ensuring the successful setup and operation of our lab, with a primary focus on obtaining the necessary animal licensing from the UK authorities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Animal Licensing: Lead the process of obtaining animal research licenses from the relevant UK authorities. This is the primary responsibility of this position and requires some prior experience and knowledge in this area. We are open to highly motivated applicants with less experience but proven capability to work with government authorities.
2. Corporate or non-profit Incorporation: Explore and assist in the incorporation of a company or an NGO to facilitate the lab’s operations.
3. Location Procurement: Identify and secure a suitable industrial space for the research lab.
4. Research Support: Provide support in lab setup, potentially including tasks related to animal lab research or general biological research.
There are several main documents related to the licensing issue including the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act: ASPA; in particular Section 2C which explains what is required to be granted an establishment license. Guidelines for the appointment of an Establishment Licence holder and several Named people required under an Establishment License (see Guidance to ASPA Chapter 8). There are also guidelines for suitable facilities that comply with the Code of Practice for rodents. The final requirement is for obtaining a project license for the work we will carry out and you will need personal license holders to do the procedures.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Demonstrable experience or capability to obtain animal research licenses in the UK is essential. If you are already a licensed animal research technician, contract veterinarian, or named person under legislation we are particularly interested in hearing from you.
- Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Biology, or a related field is preferred - but not required.
- Skills: Strong organizational and project management skills, excellent communication abilities, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
- Other: Knowledge of the UK regulatory environment for animal research and experience in lab setup is highly desirable.
Terms of Employment:
- Employment type: contract based remuneration with possibility of transitioning to salaried position in the future
- Duration: 12 to 18 months with a possibility of extension and/or permanent employment.
- Work Hours: Part-time @50% initially (first 3 to 6 months), with potential for full-time based on workload and performance.
